Andrew Powell

Biography
Author Andrew Powell has been writing about the natural world and the experience of travelling. Along the way, she became quietly obsessed with vocabulary — specifically, with the gap between the richness of physical experience and the poverty of the words most writers reach for first. How many ways are there to describe the color of water? How do you write about silence without the word ‘silence’? What is the right word for the particular smell of rain on dry stone?
These questions led Andrew to build a personal vocabulary archive — words collected from literature, natural history writing, travel journalism, and linguistics — which eventually became the foundation for SynonymVirl.
She has written for travel and nature publications in print and online, led descriptive writing workshops for adult learners, and spoken about nature language at writing festivals and educational events. She is particularly interested in the revival of landscape vocabulary — words for specific natural features and phenomena that are falling out of everyday use but deserve to survive.
Andrew holds a degree in Environmental Studies and English, and a postgraduate certificate in journalism. She splits her time between writing, developing SynonymVirl, and spending as much time as possible outdoors.
